Frequently Asked Questions
General
Although M.S. degrees can be obtained en route to the Ph.D., we do not recruit an annual class of M.S.-seeking students. A non-thesis M.S. in Teaching degree with a specialization in chemistry is offered.
Ph.D. students begin in the Fall semester. We do not actively recruit a Spring Class. In special circumstances, some students defer their start date, but it is not generally recommended.
We invite all accepted applicants who are enrolled in a US institution to visit. Our visitation weekend dates for the upcoming admissions cycle will be announced later in the application cycle. Our visitation weekends include opportunities to meet current students and faculty, a poster session hosted by current graduate students, meetings with individual faculty to discuss ongoing research, and an opportunity to get a flavor of Gainesville and its surroundings.
UF Chemistry will arrange your travel arrangements and accommodations. Details are provided as part of your letter of acceptance. If you are having trouble with travel arrangements, contact the Chemistry Grad Program Office. We look forward to hosting you!
Financial
All students in good standing are supported through teaching and research assistantships. Details will be provided in your offer of admission letter.
No. All students, with the exception of those who come with their own funding (e.g., government scholarships), receive a stipend and benefits.
We recognize the time, cost, and effort involved in applying, and we value every potential student. Given the high volume of fee waiver requests we receive and to ensure fairness, our department’s policy is to not provide fee waivers. We hope this will not prevent you from submitting your application, and we wish you the best as you move forward.
Application
For full consideration, all materials must be received by Dec. 1. Apps received after Dec. 1 will be reviewed but may not receive full consideration due to space constraints.
Describe what you would like the admissions committee to know about you. Examples include: your motivations for attending graduate school and your career goals, the type of chemistry that you are interested in pursuing during your graduate career, and the faculty members at UF with whom you would like to work.
The research area or division of chemistry you are most interested in.
Contact or support from a faculty member is not required for admission; the department reviews all applications. However, you are encouraged to contact any faculty member(s) if you are interested in their research and include their name as the department contact.
Florida law requires that all teaching faculty, including International Teaching Assistants (ITAs), are proficient in English. The three approved tests for oral proficiency are the TOEFL iBT (speaking ≥23), the IELTS Academic (speaking ≥7), and the UF SPEAK Test (≥45), which may be administered in an online format to students who are offered admission to the program. See additional requirements and possible exemptions on the UF Admissions page.
GRE scores are no longer required for admission. However, if you have taken the GRE, you may submit your scores and they will be included with your application.
Please monitor the status of your application through the application portal.
First, check the UF Admissions page for an answer. If you still have a question, contact the Chemistry Grad Program Office.
